BJP Protest Across 595 Mandals Over Gamharia Police Station Case

Ranchi, November 1: The Bharatiya Janata Party has intensified its opposition to the Jharkhand government following the alleged rape of a woman at the Gamharia police station in Saraikela-Kharsawan district. The party has announced a statewide protest in response.

Dr. Neera Yadav, former state minister and BJP MLA from Kodarma, addressed the media at the party's state office on Sunday. She said that women in Jharkhand are not safe at home, and now they are not safe in police stations either.

Yadav explained that the woman had gone to the police station to file a complaint about domestic abuse by her husband and a family dispute. As it was night, she stayed on the premises. She had believed that the police presence would keep her secure. However, she has alleged that the policeman responsible for her protection committed the crime against her.

According to Yadav, the incident has shaken public confidence in the police. She said it reflects on the functioning of the whole police system and the accountability of the state government. The first obligation of the government, she said, is to deliver quick justice to the victim.

She asked the Chief Minister to make clear to the public how the authority of law will be established and how women's safety will be ensured. Yadav also pointed to the six-year vacancy in the post of chairperson of the State Women's Commission.

She alleged that criminals have grown bolder under the present government and referred to rising incidents of rape and murder. She also criticised the government over infiltration, the drug trade and gunfire incidents, warning that Jharkhand's social harmony and sense of mutual trust are weakening.

Seema Singh, state president of BJP Mahila Morcha, and Rafia Naaz, state spokesperson, were also present at the event.

In protest, BJP workers will burn effigies of the Chief Minister in all 595 organisational mandals across the state on Sunday evening.
