BJP Faces Criticism as Minister Calls for High Sugar Prices but Child Discounts

The BJP government in Madhya Pradesh is under intense scrutiny after cabinet minister Kailash Vijayvargiya suggested that sugar should be priced higher, yet remain affordable for children. The statement, made amid a nationwide surge in sugar costs, was interpreted by many as a call to prioritize profit over public welfare.

Opposition parties seized the moment to highlight the growing burden on households, noting that rising prices of essential goods are forcing families to cut back on nutrition. They also referenced recent reports of contaminated water reaching homes in Indore, arguing that the administration is failing to address basic civic issues.

Jaswinder Singh, state secretary of the MCCI, reminded the assembly that Vijayvargiya also functions as the government’s spokesperson, making his comments an official party position. Singh accused the BJP of exploiting communal sentiments to distract from economic hardships, and warned that the party’s handling of the sugar issue could further alienate voters during upcoming festivals.
