A tale of marital betrayal turned deadly in Gaya, Bihar, where Satendra Mahto, 30, ended his life through self-immolation after enduring years of his wife’s unfaithfulness and intimidation. Occurring in Sheikhpura’s Shastri Mohalla under Sherghati thana, the event coincided with Maha Shivratri festivities, underscoring the irony of spousal devotion rituals.
According to distraught relatives, Satendra’s eight-year marriage soured due to his wife’s alleged liaisons with other men. His sister Julie Kumari exposed how the wife hid her phone conversations for hours, sparking violent spats when Satendra intervened. To cover her tracks, she coerced him into purchasing property in Hyderabad under her mother’s name.
Tensions peaked when Satendra witnessed his wife’s affair firsthand, only to face backlash from his mother-in-law with threats of fabricated dowry and abuse charges. These warnings materialized into a police case, landing Satendra in detention and amplifying his mental anguish. Recently, with his wife and two young daughters away at her parents’ house, the pressure became unbearable.
In a final act of desperation, Satendra poured petrol over himself and ignited it. Despite neighbors’ frantic efforts, he succumbed to burns. Police arrived promptly, securing the site and dispatching the remains for autopsy at Magadh Medical. SHO Mohan Kumar affirmed a detailed investigation, with actions to follow family testimonies. This shocking case exposes the perils of unchecked domestic abuse and false accusations.
