Why Daily Fuel Rates Remain Unchanged Despite International Oil Swings

The Indian fuel pricing formula is a blend of global oil prices, government levies and on‑the‑ground costs. On 7 August 2026, the international market showed a modest rise in Brent to $83.3 and WTI at $77.9, but those movements did not translate into a new pump price.

Retail petrol now costs Rs 111.68 per litre in Bengaluru and Rs 112.02 in Pune, while diesel is priced at Rs 99.56 in Bengaluru and Rs 98.66 in Pune. The figures are identical to the previous day because the price‑setting authority evaluates the overall cost structure before making a change.

Three major components dilute the impact of crude price fluctuations: 1. **Excise duty** – a central tax that forms a large part of the retail price. 2. **State VAT** – varies by state and can offset crude movements. 3. **Logistics and dealer margins** – transportation, storage and dealer commissions are relatively stable.

When these elements remain steady, a short‑term swing in Brent or WTI does not warrant a revision. This explains why consumers often see the same numbers day after day, even though headlines about oil volatility dominate the news.
