In Murshidabad and Malda districts, erosion of riverbanks has accelerated, displacing thousands of residents and threatening local agriculture. During the dry months, a large share of the water is diverted to Bangladesh, leaving the state with insufficient flow for its own industrial and farming needs. State officials argue that the treaty, drafted more than three decades ago, no longer reflects the present ecological balance of the Ganga basin.
