A historic moment for Bihar tourism: the majestic ruins of Vikramshila University in Bhagalpur have made their grand entry into the official Buddhist Circuit. With this inclusion, the circuit spans eight districts, opening new avenues for spiritual seekers and cultural explorers visiting the state.
Founded by Pala ruler Dharmapala, Vikramshila stood as a pinnacle of medieval education until its tragic destruction in the 13th century. Renowned worldwide, it drew students and pandits from distant lands to study complex disciplines like metaphysics, religious texts, grammar, logic, and Tantra.
The site’s architectural marvels continue to captivate—a towering double-storied stupa dominates the landscape, surrounded by a cruciform central structure. Archaeological excavations reveal a vast library, traces of Tibetan and Hindu temples, underscoring Vikramshila’s role as a melting pot of spiritual traditions.
Bihar Tourism is pulling out all stops with targeted promotion at Bodh Gaya, where foreign tourists receive dedicated guides highlighting Vikramshila. This smart marketing aims to channel visitors northward, revitalizing Bhagalpur’s tourism sector and generating employment opportunities for locals.
Now complete with iconic sites—Bodh Gaya’s enlightenment epicenter, Nalanda’s ancient university, Rajgir’s serenity, Vaishali’s Buddhist heritage, Patna’s imperial past, Barabar Caves, Champaran’s stupas, and Vikramshila’s scholarly ruins—the circuit weaves a compelling narrative of Bihar’s Buddhist golden age, inviting the world to discover its timeless treasures.
