Security lapses exposed as prisoner directs inter‑state gang via app

The Karimnagar heist has raised serious concerns about jail security and digital monitoring. According to the Karimnagar police commissioner, Subodh Singh used a specially designed mobile app to communicate with his gang while incarcerated at Purnia Central Jail.

The app allegedly allowed Singh to send encrypted instructions, location details and timing cues without being detected by jail authorities. This method helped the gang synchronize their operation to coincide with the nation‑wide NEET examination, a day when police resources were stretched thin.

Investigators recovered over 161 tolas of gold jewellery and 112 kilograms of silver, valuing the loot at roughly ₹82 lakh. They also seized weapons, a getaway vehicle and the mobile devices used in the coordination.

The case underscores gaps in inmate monitoring, particularly the ability of prisoners to access mobile networks. Authorities are now reviewing surveillance protocols and considering stricter controls on electronic devices inside correctional facilities.
