Saran Ammonia Leak Highlights Massive Safety Lapses at Cold Storage

An investigation into the late-night ammonia gas leak at Rama Cold Storage in Chapra has revealed shocking violations of safety protocols. Saran Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Nitesh Kumar, who visited the site following the emergency, confirmed that the facility lacked essential safety equipment and emergency response mechanisms. The leak, which started late Thursday night after a loud bang within the storage premises, forced hundreds of residents out of their homes in the Sadha Dhala area as toxic fumes enveloped the locality. The administrative probe found that the cold storage was operating without the mandatory safety gear required for handling hazardous chemicals like ammonia. SDM Kumar stated that the main supply line has been sealed to prevent further leaks, but the lack of basic precautions at the site is a matter of grave concern. Residents have expressed deep-seated anger, questioning why industrial units using dangerous chemicals are allowed to operate in densely populated areas without regular inspections or oversight from the health and safety departments. The human cost of this negligence was evident at the Chapra Sadar Hospital, where four victims were treated for acute exposure symptoms. Among them, children as young as five were seen struggling to breathe, highlighting the vulnerability of the neighborhood's residents. This event serves as a grim reminder of the Muzaffarpur ICU fire earlier this week, pointing toward a systemic failure in enforcing safety regulations across the state of Bihar. Local activists are now calling for a comprehensive audit of all cold storage facilities to prevent another potentially lethal disaster.
