Police Use Water Cannons, Tear Gas as Siwan Protest Turns Violent
As student and youth groups gathered at Gandhi Maidan in Siwan and began marching toward JP Chowk, the demonstration turned hostile in the afternoon. Protesters started pelting police with stones, and additional agitators from nearby roads joined the assault, escalating the violence.
In response, law‑enforcement deployed water cannons and tear‑gas shells to disperse the crowd. Multiple police units and senior officers were called to the scene to restore order. The authorities reported that 20 police officers, including two Sub‑Divisional Police Officers, two Inspectors, two Sub‑Inspectors, and thirteen constables, were injured.
A total of 82 FIRs have been lodged against participants, with 17 arrests made so far. The Supreme Court has been kept informed of the ongoing investigations.
