Serious allegations of negligence have surfaced following the deadly fire at a private hospital in Muzaffarpur that killed five patients. Survivors and their families claim that the hospital was woefully understaffed at the time of the emergency, and the fire safety systems failed to function when they were needed most. According to eyewitnesses, the fire broke out after a ventilator exploded in the 5th-floor ICU, but there were no trained personnel available to operate the fire extinguishers or manage the evacuation of patients who were physically unable to move. The district administration has promised strict action against those found responsible.
