Nalandian Athlete Wins Bronze at Glasgow 2026, Honored at Home

Jhandu Kumar, a native of Harnaut in Nalanda, returned from Glasgow with a bronze medal in the men’s heavyweight para-powerlifting division. His successful 190 kg lift not only added to India’s tally but also transformed a once-mocked name into a symbol of pride.

The journey began in a family that earned a living selling vegetables. Faced with limited resources, Jhandu financed his training by driving an e-rickshaw for months, balancing work and intense gym sessions.

At the Commonwealth Games, he first cleared 181 kg, then improved to 190 kg on his second attempt. Although a third attempt at 196 kg was unsuccessful, the 190 kg lift secured the bronze.

A massive reception greeted him in Harnaut: residents filled the streets, lined a private gym on Chandni Road for a civic salute, and presented flower garlands. Officials and sports fans alike honored him with traditional garments.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended public congratulations, and a personal meeting in August 2026 highlighted the athlete’s determination. Jhandu now sets his focus on breaking the 232 kg barrier at upcoming Para Asian Games and the Paralympics.
