Motihari Infant Sale Exposes Hidden Child Trafficking Network

A grim episode of child trafficking unfolded in Motihari after police rescued a newborn who had been sold for Rs 4.5 lakh. The parents, Pramod Sahni and his wife Indu Devi, live in the Kubra Pakdiya locality and already have six children. According to investigators, a local Asha worker named Shobha Singh introduced the couple to a buyer and arranged the transfer on August 9, claiming the child needed intensive care.

The buyer, a resident referred to as Chinta Devi, was supposed to complete the payment of Rs 4.5 lakh. While Rs 1.6 lakh was handed over, the remaining Rs 10,000 sparked a conflict that culminated in a confrontation near Sadar Hospital on August 23. Police stationed at the site detained the parents, the Asha worker, a broker named Tania Khatoon and the buyer. The newborn was retrieved safely and handed over to a child‑protection agency.

During the raid, officers confiscated Rs 1.5 lakh in cash that was linked to the illegal sale. All accused individuals have been charged under the Juvenile Justice Act and sections dealing with human trafficking. The investigation is also looking into whether the Asha worker has previously facilitated similar illegal transactions.

Authorities have urged the public to report suspicious activities and highlighted the importance of economic support for families with many children to prevent such desperate measures.
