MLC Election Results: NDA, INDIA Bloc Seat Tally Across States

The latest results from the Legislative Council (MLC) elections for 28 seats in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka and Maharashtra show a mixed outcome for political parties. Congress, the main opposition party, did not win any seat so far, while the NDA and INDIA bloc partners posted results that varied from state to state.

A State-by-State Overview

The results are best understood state by state. Karnataka produced a clean sweep for the NDA, while Bihar also favoured the NDA, though with several surprises. Uttar Pradesh offered the INDIA bloc its clearest sign of relief, and Maharashtra remained a closely contested battle.

Karnataka: NDA Clean Sweep

The ruling Congress faced a heavy defeat in Karnataka's Legislative Council polls. The BJP-JDS alliance, part of the NDA, won all four seats, two graduate and two teacher constituencies. Congress failed to win a single seat despite holding power in the state.

Uttar Pradesh: INDIA Bloc Finds Some Relief

After the setback in Karnataka, the INDIA bloc gained some ground in Uttar Pradesh. Samajwadi Party, a Congress ally, exceeded expectations in the 10 seats declared, which included 4 graduate and 6 teacher constituencies. BJP won 6 seats and Samajwadi Party won 4. Counting for the Varanasi graduate seat was still underway.

The largest margin came in the Allahabad-Jhansi graduate constituency, where Samajwadi Party's Dr. Mansingh Yadav defeated BJP's Ashok Kumar Rathore by 27,663 votes. In Gorakhpur-Faizabad, BJP's Dhruv Tripathi won by only 307 votes over independent Rajeev Yadav. In Lucknow's graduate seat, Samajwadi Party's Kanti Singh received 56,905 votes, compared with 39,778 for BJP's Awanish Kumar Singh.

BJP secured the Lucknow teacher, Bareilly-Moradabad teacher, Meerut graduate, Agra graduate and Meerut teacher seats. Samajwadi Party took the Varanasi teacher, Agra teacher and Allahabad-Jhansi graduate seats.

Bihar: NDA Leads, Jan Suraaj Enters the Council

All 8 seats in the Bihar Legislative Council have now been declared. The BJP won 3 seats and JD(U) won 1, giving the NDA a strong position. The INDIA bloc won one seat, which went to the RJD. Jan Suraaj won one seat, and two seats went to independent candidates.

The Kosi graduate constituency saw the widest margin in Bihar, where BJP's Dr. N.K. Yadav defeated the RJD candidate by 10,026 votes.

The Patna teacher seat was a major upset. RJD's Dr. Sanjeev Kumar defeated BJP's Naval Kishore Yadav, a long-serving and senior BJP leader. JD(U)'s Neeraj Kumar won the Patna graduate seat. BJP's Narendra Prasad Singh won Tirhut teacher, and Jan Suraaj's Dr. Suresh Prasad Rai won Darbhanga teacher. This marks Jan Suraaj's first victory in the Legislative Council.

Independent Rahul Raj won the Saran teacher seat. In the graduate constituencies, BJP's Sarvesh Kumar won Darbhanga, while independent Vanshidhar Brajwasi won Tirhut.

Maharashtra: MVA Holds an Edge

In Maharashtra's five-seat contest, the Mahayuti (NDA) and the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) fought closely. BJP's Kaustubh Gawde defeated Sachin Sanap in the Pune teacher seat. NCP (Sharad Pawar faction)'s Harshada Jadhav Deshmukh won the Pune graduate seat. Shiv Sena (Shinde faction)'s Kiran Sarnaik won the Amravati teacher seat.

Congress's Abhijeet Wanjari scored an upset win in the Nagpur graduate constituency. The MVA has won three of the five seats so far. NCP (Sharad Pawar faction)'s Pratap Singh Patil is leading in the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar graduate seat.

With counting still in progress in a few constituencies, the final seat tally may still change.
