Japanese Miyawaki Technique to Turn Vacant City Plots into Dense Forests in Bihar

Inspired by successful projects in other Indian states, Bihar intends to replicate the Miyawaki model on municipal and privately owned empty plots. The method, pioneered by botanist Akira Miyawaki, relies on planting a rich mix of indigenous trees and shrubs very close together. Soil conditioning, regular watering and vigilant maintenance are critical in the first few years. Though growth rates depend on local soil, climate and species selection, the approach promises a rapid increase in canopy cover on land that would otherwise remain barren.
