Investigation Launched After Footage Reveals Alleged Assault in Motihari Police Custody
Footage circulating on social media depicts a police officer repeatedly striking a detained youth with a lathi inside the Chiraia police station of Motihari district. The victim, a resident of Belhi village called TunTun Sah, can be heard begging for his life, shouting "Bap re bap…" while the officer continues the assault despite the pleas of a bystander.
The young man was originally arrested on September 25 for alleged alcohol consumption. He was subsequently presented before the Shikarganj Subordinate Court, where he secured bail after payment of a fine. The emergence of the video has prompted questions about why a custodial beating would occur while legal proceedings were still pending.
Superintendent of Police Swarn Prabhat has taken note of the clip and directed the senior constable featured in the recording to submit an explanation. An internal inquiry, coupled with a departmental review, is now in progress to establish the factual matrix of the incident and to assess any breach of protocol.
The case adds to a growing list of accusations against police forces across the country, fueling calls for stricter oversight, transparent investigations, and reforms aimed at protecting the rights of individuals in police custody.
