India Achieves Early 20% Ethanol Goal, Sets Sights on 30% by 2030

India has reached its target of blending 20 percent ethanol into petrol ahead of schedule, with oil marketing companies commencing nationwide distribution of E20 on April 1. The rapid rollout has prompted the government to announce a more ambitious target: 30 percent ethanol blending by the end of 2030.

The Centre estimates that the current programme has already saved the country more than Rs 1.4 lakh crore in foreign‑exchange by reducing crude‑oil imports. Officials say the policy also strengthens energy security, lowers greenhouse‑gas emissions and offers a stable market for sugarcane growers.

Future blending decisions will continue to be guided by scientific evaluations and stakeholder consultations, ensuring that any increase in ethanol proportion does not compromise vehicle performance or consumer safety.

The move aligns India with other major ethanol‑blending nations and signals a determined push toward cleaner mobility and sustainable agriculture.
