Homebound Struggle: Train Overload and Plummeting Flight Availability

This Diwali and Chhath season, returning home has proven exceptionally challenging for expatriates from Bihar and Eastern UP residing in Delhi and Mumbai. A massive exodus toward their hometowns has overwhelmed transportation infrastructure, creating a severe crunch on tickets and a sharp spike in fares.

Railway services operating out of Delhi and Mumbai toward UP and Bihar are completely sold out. The carriages are utterly full, eliminating any possibility of general or sleeper accommodation. Travelers are forced to stand for long durations, as even basic standing space is scarce. Major railway stations are witnessing unprecedented footfall, with queues stretching across platforms. Securing a seat or berth has become nearly impossible, causing immense frustration among passengers with confirmed bookings.

Aviation networks are equally strained. Flight fares to Patna and Varanasi from Mumbai have escalated to between 15,000 and 22,000 rupees for the November 11 through 13 period. These exorbitant rates significantly burden ordinary commuters trying to celebrate the festivals. The price inflation is so severe that routes to northern Indian cities now command higher fares than premium international flights to Dubai. Everyone from budget travelers to regular commuters is facing an unprecedented mobility crisis during the festive window.
