Hindi‑Medium Candidates in UPSC CSE: Success Rate Compared to English

Language has been a contentious issue in the UPSC CSE for decades. Candidates who opt for Hindi or other regional languages argue that the examination system favours English‑medium aspirants. Recent data from 2021‑2024 underscores the disparity.

In 2021, 538 candidates attempted the mains in Hindi, with 26 selections. In 2022, 587 appeared and 71 were chosen. The 2023 Hindi cohort numbered 599, producing 57 successful candidates, while 2024 saw 1,133 Hindi‑medium candidates with only 50 making the cut.

When compared to the overall success pool, English‑medium candidates enjoy a conversion rate many times higher than their Hindi‑medium counterparts. The numbers suggest that language continues to influence outcomes, prompting ongoing calls for a more balanced evaluation framework.
