Health‑Driven VRS of Bihar DGP Leads to Immediate CIC Appointment
In a significant reshuffle, Bihar's Director General of Police Vinay Kumar chose to retire voluntarily earlier than planned, driven by recent health concerns. The Home Department's notification, released late Saturday, confirmed that Kumar's VRS request filed on September 25 was approved instantly, bypassing the mandatory three‑month notice rule.
Concurrently, the General Administration Department appointed the former DGP as the state's Chief Information Commissioner. The order states that Kumar will assume the CIC role from the date he takes charge, marking a swift shift from policing to information governance.
Kumar, a 1991 batch IPS officer, had been on leave for medical treatment prior to submitting his retirement application. After recovering, he will oversee the execution of the Right to Information Act and ensure transparency in government functions.
The acting police chief, IPS officer Preeta Verma, will continue to lead the Bihar police until a permanent replacement is named. The government highlighted that this dual transition safeguards both public safety and the state's commitment to open information.
