Gandak River Near Critical Mark in Bagaha; Close Monitoring Needed

The Gandak river’s flow through Bihar has drawn special attention after Nepal’s flash flood. While most gauge stations are still within safe boundaries, the Bagaha stretch is edging alarmingly close to the critical level.

Measurements taken on the morning of August 27 show the water surface at 89.10 m, just 30 cm below the predefined flood line of 89.40 m. This narrow margin means that even a modest increase in discharge could push the river into the danger zone.

The Valmiki Nagar barrage, a key regulator for the Gandak, reported a discharge of roughly 1.04 lakh cubic feet per second, a reduction from the previous night’s 1.50 lakh cusecs. Although the drop is encouraging, the proximity of the Bagaha reading to the warning level calls for heightened vigilance, especially if additional rainfall or upstream runoff occurs.
