Toxic Gas Tragedy in Bihar: Four Labourers Fatalities During Septic Tank Work

A deadly gas exposure incident occurred on Saturday in Savanhai Jagdish, Gopalganj, Bihar, when four construction workers entered a partially built septic tank to adjust its centering. The first entrant failed to reappear, prompting three others to descend in a desperate rescue effort. Inside the enclosed tank, an invisible toxic gas—likely methane or hydrogen sulfide—filled the space, causing immediate asphyxiation.

Emergency responders arrived after villagers pulled the unconscious bodies from the tank. Despite rapid transport to a medical facility, all four victims were pronounced dead. The district administration, headed by DM Sameer Saurabh, has ordered a comprehensive safety audit of the site and promised financial assistance of four lakh rupees to each bereaved family. The incident underscores the critical need for proper ventilation and gas monitoring in underground construction work.
