Eastern Bihar Set for Air Connectivity Boost as 1,356 Acres Secured for Airport

The government’s approval of a compensation plan marks a decisive step toward building a greenfield airport in Sultanganj, Bhagalpur. The project will acquire 1,356 acres from five villages—Gangania, Manjli, Kaswa, Hathiok and Sujapur—each falling under the agricultural double-crop category.

Compensation is based on the revised Minimum Value Register rates effective from June 18, 2026, with a four-fold uplift to ensure fair restitution for landowners. Once the Civil Aviation Ministry signs off, the district administration will issue acquisition notices and commence the legal procedures.

The airport is expected to transform air travel for Eastern Bihar, directly benefiting Bhagalpur, Munger, Banka, Jamui, Khagaria, Lakhsisarai, Nawada and Purnia, and indirectly serving Katihar, Kishanganj, Saharsa and Madhepura. By linking the region to national and international flight networks, the facility will bolster religious tourism to Ajgaibinath Dham, expand the silk trade, and create a host of new business opportunities.
