E20 vs Pure Petrol: Costs, Availability and Engine Impact
India’s transition to E20 petrol—fuel blended with 20% ethanol—has sparked a heated discussion after Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said that motorists who dislike the blend can opt for 100% pure gasoline, albeit at a higher cost. The minister’s clarification comes amid widespread complaints about reduced mileage and worries that older engines may suffer from increased wear.
Pure gasoline is largely absent from the average fuel pump. The nearest substitutes are premium grades such as Indian Oil’s 100 Octane, HPCL’s Power100 and Bharat Petroleum’s Speed 100. These fuels are produced with minimal ethanol, with Indian Oil’s 100 Octane claiming almost zero alcohol content. However, they command a premium price; in Delhi, 100 Octane runs at roughly ₹167‑₹170 per litre, a 60% markup over regular unleaded.
The distinction between octane rating and ethanol content is crucial. Octane rating reflects a fuel’s ability to resist knocking, while ethanol percentage shows how much alcohol is mixed in. Premium fuels target high‑performance vehicles, keeping ethanol low to preserve energy density and prevent moisture absorption, which can affect engine health.
Availability is another hurdle. High‑octane fuels are sold only at select stations in large cities, leaving drivers in smaller towns without access. Consequently, most consumers remain dependent on E20 despite the higher cost and potential mileage loss.
Technical assessments indicate that standard hatchbacks and sedans can run on 100 Octane without damage, and some users report smoother operation and marginally better acceleration. Yet, the extra expense rarely translates into meaningful benefits for everyday commuters, making pure petrol a marginal option in the current market.
