Duplicate PAN Cards and Wrong Details: What the Tax Department Does

The Income Tax Department monitors PAN usage closely to curb fraud and ensure tax compliance. Two common infractions that attract administrative action are holding duplicate PAN cards and providing inaccurate personal information during the application.

The law is explicit: a single individual may possess only one PAN. When the system detects multiple PAN numbers linked to the same Aadhaar or identical personal data, it triggers an audit. The department may cancel the surplus PANs and impose a penalty ranging from ₹10,000 to ₹50,000, depending on the severity and intent. If you unintentionally receive a second PAN, the correct course is to surrender it through the online surrender form, attaching a copy of the card and a brief explanation.

Incorrect details such as a misspelled name, wrong date of birth, or an inaccurate father's name do not automatically render a PAN inoperative, but they can cause verification failures during KYC processes. Financial institutions and mutual fund houses often reject applications that cannot match PAN records, leading to transaction delays. The tax department, however, may issue a notice asking for correction if the discrepancy affects tax filing.

If you discover any errors, you can request a correction via the e‑filing portal. The process involves filling out a correction request, uploading supporting documents—such as a passport, birth certificate, or school certificate—and paying a nominal fee (currently ₹100). Upon approval, the revised details are reflected in the PAN database, and the card regains full operational status.

Maintaining accurate PAN information and avoiding duplicate applications not only keeps you compliant but also protects you from unnecessary penalties and the inconvenience of re‑activating a card. Regularly review your PAN status on the official portal, especially after major life events like name changes or Aadhaar updates.
