District Officials Respond to Fatal Crowd Crush at Ashokdham Temple
The district magistrate of Lakhsiraj arrived at the Ashokdham Temple site shortly after the fatal crowd crush that claimed seven female lives on Nag Panchami. He reported that the incident began around 3:30 a.m. when the number of devotees surged, and a bamboo barricade installed along the two‑kilometre approach from the railway station gave way.
The magistrate, accompanied by the senior superintendent of police, established a relief camp and coordinated the transport of more than a dozen injured persons to the district hospital. He confirmed that the barricade was erected to manage the flow of pilgrims but was not designed to withstand the sudden surge caused by the circulating rumor of an electric shock.
In a press briefing, officials emphasized that immediate medical assistance was provided and that a comprehensive review of crowd‑control measures would be undertaken. They also pledged to hold those responsible for any negligence accountable. The incident has raised serious questions about the preparedness of local authorities to handle large‑scale religious gatherings.
