BJP Sidelining Upendra Kushwaha? The Pawan Singh Factor Explained

In a strategic maneuver that has redefined Bihar's NDA dynamics, the BJP has bypassed the demands of its ally Upendra Kushwaha to pave the way for Bhojpuri singer and actor Pawan Singh. The decision to field Pawan Singh for the Legislative Council has left Upendra Kushwaha in a precarious position, struggling to maintain his political relevance. This move is particularly stinging because Pawan Singh is widely blamed for Kushwaha’s loss in the Karakat parliamentary constituency just months ago. The central conflict revolves around Deepak Prakash, Upendra Kushwaha’s son and a minister in the Nitish Kumar-led cabinet. Under constitutional law, a minister must become a member of the Legislative Assembly or Council within six months of taking the oath. With the BJP claiming the available MLC slots for its own preferred candidates like Pawan Singh, Deepak Prakash faces a countdown that could end his ministerial tenure. This lack of support from the BJP indicates a growing distance between the two parties. Furthermore, the BJP’s internal strategy seems to be shifting towards Samrat Choudhary as the primary face for the Kushwaha community in Bihar. By elevating Choudhary and accommodating Pawan Singh, the BJP is effectively reducing its dependence on Upendra Kushwaha.
