Reservation Rotations May Alter Seats in Bihar’s 2026 Panchayat Vote

The 2026 panchayat elections in Bihar will feature a significant rotation of reservation categories. Seats that were earmarked for a particular community in the previous cycle are not guaranteed to retain the same status this time. For example, a ward reserved for women of the general category could be reassigned to Scheduled Castes, Extremely Backward Classes, or another unreserved group.

Similarly, an area previously reserved for Scheduled Castes might become open to women from the general category or to an Extremely Backward Class candidate. This reshuffling means that candidates who prepared for a specific seat last time may find the reservation criteria changed, forcing them to modify their electoral calculations and possibly contest a different ward.

The final reservation roster will be issued after the delimitation process, and it will influence every tier of the three‑level panchayat system, from ward members up to district council presidents.
