Bihar Night Helpline 181 Sees Calls on Love and Marriage Issues
For many women in Bihar, the most difficult conversations happen after everyone else has gone to sleep. A late-night phone call to the women's helpline 181 is often where they first share problems involving love, broken promises, and family opposition to marriage.
The helpline's records show 1,278 calls received in a single month. Of these, 731 were made at night, which is about 57 percent of the total. The numbers suggest that women are more comfortable seeking help after dark than during the day.
From betrayal to family pressure
Some callers describe relationships in which the partner initially promised marriage but later withdrew from the commitment and stopped talking. Others say the man is now backing away from his word. A separate group of women wants to marry by their own choice, but their families do not accept the decision.
Family anger and social pressure make it hard for these women to talk openly at home. Many, therefore, call the helpline to understand what they can do and which options are open to them. Their questions often focus on what steps to take next.
Counselling first, police when needed
Helpline personnel say that many young women avoid discussing their problems during daylight hours. They worry that family members will learn of the call or that their situation will not be taken seriously. Once the household is quiet, they feel more secure in reaching out.
Police involvement is not required in every case. Counselling can help women assess their circumstances and plan their way forward. When a case is serious, the helpline connects them with the police, the relevant department, or other support services as necessary.
A statewide support system
The Bihar State Women and Child Development Corporation says women's helplines are available in all 38 districts. The service is designed to help women who face distress or violence. Calls concerning domestic violence, mental and physical cruelty, and dowry harassment are also handled through the helpline.
The Union Ministry of Women and Child Development runs the 181 Women Helpline to offer emergency aid, counselling, and legal support. Whether the problem is a dispute within a relationship or pressure from family over marriage, women's views deserve attention, and their safety and wishes must be respected. In case of immediate danger, women may contact 112.
