Government Estimates ₹10 000 Cr Loss, Announces ₹7 000 Aid per Family

The Bihar state administration has placed an initial loss estimate of about ₹10,000 crore for the recent monsoon flood that inundated large swathes of the state. The figure aggregates damage across agriculture, housing, roadways, bridges and public utilities, as reported by the Water Resources, Public Health Engineering, Disaster Management, Dairy, Fisheries and Livestock departments.

The estimate is provisional; a final report is slated for preparation after October 15, once water levels fully recede and field teams can conduct detailed assessments of crop loss, structural damage and asset depreciation. Early analyses suggest that the actual figure could climb higher as more data becomes available.

In parallel with the loss assessment, the government has rolled out a cash assistance package of ₹7,000 per family for all flood‑affected households. Using the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) platform, ₹579.23 crore was transferred on September 15 to the bank accounts of 8,27,472 verified families across the 15 worst‑hit districts. The beneficiary list was compiled from block‑level surveys and cross‑checked with ration card databases to ensure accuracy.

Authorities have instructed district officials to re‑verify families that may have been missed in the first round. Any additional eligible households will be added to the payment schedule, reinforcing the government's commitment to an inclusive relief effort.

To complement cash aid, a comprehensive survey of damaged homes is underway. Survey teams equipped with digital cameras are documenting structural damage at the gram‑panchayat level. The collected visual evidence will feed into a housing grant programme, where eligible families can receive reconstruction subsidies based on pre‑defined government standards.

The flood also strained health services. Medical teams are using boats to navigate flooded areas, delivering essential medicines and conducting mobile health camps. Relief shelters are providing meals, clean drinking water and sanitation facilities, while community kitchens prepare hot food for displaced residents.

Officials caution that the €10,000 crore loss is only a snapshot of the broader socio‑economic impact. The disruption to rural connectivity, agricultural cycles and market access could have lingering effects on Bihar’s development trajectory unless swift rehabilitation measures are implemented.
