Begusarai Ganga Boat Mishap: Two Missing, Four Hurt

A tragic boat mishap in Begusarai has left two people missing and four injured after a boat carrying laborers overturned in the Ganga on Wednesday evening. The accident occurred in the Dhaav diyara area, across the river from Chamtha Rajauli, which falls under Chamtha-1 panchayat in Bachhwara police station limits.

The boat had roughly 30 to 35 people on board. Several passengers swam out of the water on their own, while rescue efforts were launched for those who remained in the river. Police and administrative officials are at the spot, and a search for the missing continues.

Workers heading home from a day in the fields

The workers from Chamtha Rajauli village had crossed over to the Dhaav diyara area, about three kilometers away, to plant parwal. The work was completed on Wednesday evening, and everyone boarded one boat to head back to their village.

In the middle of the river, the boat began to sway and suddenly turned over. Shouts filled the air as people struggled in the water. Most reached safety by swimming, but two were swept away by the swift flow of the Ganga and have not been located since.

Hospital treatment for four injured

The injured were brought out of the river with help from local residents and taken for medical care. Poonam Kumari, aged 15, the daughter of Udgar Mahto, and Chandan Kumar, aged 16, the son of Visho Mahto, are both residents of Chamtha Rajauli. They have been admitted in serious condition to the Community Health Centre in Bachhwara. Two more injured persons are being treated at a local private hospital.

Chandan Kumar, currently under treatment, and his grandfather Bhola Mahto said the laborers had all traveled together in one boat after finishing work. They alleged that the boat was carrying more people than its capacity, which made it unstable and caused it to overturn.

Police and administration on site

After the incident was reported, SDPO Krishna Kumar, Circle Officer Pritam Gautam and Bachhwara SHO Vikas Kumar Rai reached the location with a police force. Under the watch of the administration, local divers are assisting in the search for the two missing people. SDPO Krishna Kumar said information had been received that two people drowned after the boat capsized. The search operation is continuing with support from local divers and the administration team.
