Strategic candidate selection in Bankipur: BJP banks on Kayastha vote with Abhishek Kumar

Bankipur, one of Bihar’s most high‑profile urban constituencies, is preparing for a by‑poll after Nitin Nabin’s resignation. The Bharatiya Janata Party has chosen Abhishek Kumar, a long‑time Kayastha activist and former city‑level president, as its nominee.

Kumar’s résumé includes tenure as vice‑president of the party’s youth wing, two terms as district chief, and senior roles such as state minister and general secretary. His deep roots within the Kayastha community are seen as a tactical move to retain the bloc that has historically delivered decisive margins for the BJP.

Bankipur’s electorate numbers about 3.79 lakh, with Kayastha voters constituting a substantial share. The party hopes that Kumar’s community credentials, combined with his organizational experience, will replicate the 2025 victory in which Nabin secured over 63% of the vote. The main challenger, Prashant Kishor of the Jan Suraj Party, will test this calculation with his own network of supporters.
