From Anthropology to MBBS: How India and Pakistan's Education Heads Got Their Degrees

The clash over the NEET examination has brought unexpected attention to the academic pedigrees of the ministers responsible for shaping curricula in India and Pakistan. While Dharmendra Pradhan's name is linked to anthropology, Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui's is associated with medicine.

Pradhan graduated from Talcher College before enrolling at Utkal University, where he completed an MA in Anthropology in 1990. His research focused on tribal societies in eastern India, a discipline that emphasizes cultural analysis and social structures.

Conversely, Siddiqui's education was firmly grounded in the health sciences. He earned his MBBS from Sindh Medical College, Karachi, in 1989, later practicing as a physician before entering the political sphere. The contrast between a social science doctorate and a professional medical degree underscores the varied expertise that can lead to leadership of an education ministry.
