AI and Robotics to Speed Up Silver Jewellery Testing, Says BIS
To make silver purity testing more efficient, BIS is piloting advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and robotic automation. A robotic arm, initially trialled for cement analysis, is being adapted for metal testing, while laboratory instruments are being linked to a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) for automatic data capture and computation.
These innovations aim to reduce human error, speed up result processing, and handle the growing volume of samples—about 2.70 lakh products were examined in the last year alone. The integration of AI-driven analytics will help BIS maintain rigorous standards and quickly identify any deviation from the prescribed silver purity metrics.
Consumers are encouraged to look for the BIS hallmark and HUID number on their purchases, as the agency can initiate further investigations if a complaint is lodged through the BIS Care app.
