11 States Served Notice on Riverbank Violations, SC Says

During a hearing a week ago, the Supreme Court issued formal notices to eleven jurisdictions that share the Ganga basin. The list comprises Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi. The court demanded comprehensive reports on illegal river‑bank occupations and on the demarcation of flood‑plain zones.

The judges emphasized that previous orders had been largely ignored, prompting a tougher stance. They called for an audit of all projects affecting the river, including sand mining, industrial discharge and unauthorized housing, to be completed before the next judicial review.
