In a bold accusation, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) legislator Bhai Virendra has charged the Bihar government with caste-based policing. Claiming that law enforcement disproportionately targets Yadav and Muslim criminals while sparing others, Virendra’s outburst reflects deepening political rifts in the state.
During a media briefing in Patna, the MLA painted a grim picture of Bihar’s security landscape. ‘Incidents of crime are skyrocketing, yet arrests are selective,’ he noted. ‘Every caste has its share of wrongdoers, but only one community faces the heat.’
Virendra explicitly named Yadavs and Muslims as victims of this alleged bias, insisting that protection is extended to non-Yadav criminals. ‘I’m no apologist for crime,’ he stressed. ‘Equal justice for all is the demand.’
The controversy erupted against the backdrop of a fresh police encounter. Wednesday morning, Patna police received intel on a criminal syndicate gathering near Gayghat for extortion activities. STF teams swiftly encircled the area. When the gang resorted to gunfire, officers responded, wounding Rajiv Kumar, known as Surya Don, in the leg. He was apprehended and hospitalized.
JD(U)’s Neeraj Kumar dismissed the caste narrative outright. ‘Crime knows no caste or creed,’ he retorted. ‘Encounters happen when criminals shoot first—police merely protect themselves.’
This exchange highlights Bihar’s polarized discourse on law enforcement. Opposition parties argue for broader reforms, pointing to unchecked crime in rural and urban pockets alike. The government, however, maintains its zero-tolerance approach, vowing to dismantle gangster networks regardless of background.
As public safety remains a flashpoint ahead of elections, Virendra’s comments could fuel further debates on equitable policing in India’s most populous state.
