In anticipation of the upcoming assembly elections in Bihar, the Election Commission is planning an extensive door-to-door verification process to ensure the accuracy of electoral rolls. This initiative comes in response to persistent concerns raised by civil society organizations and political parties regarding the inclusion and deletion of names from voter lists. Some parties, including the Congress, have previously accused the poll authority of data manipulation. The EC aims to ‘purify’ the rolls, with officials highlighting past rigorous revisions, the last such exercise being conducted in 2004. Regular revisions of voter lists are standard practice, especially considering factors like voter deaths, new registrations, and interstate or intrastate migration. In 2024 alone, millions of amendments were necessary nationwide.
