Bhopal Violence: MP Congress Demands Impartial Police Probe

Bhopal, October 27: The Madhya Pradesh Congress has demanded an impartial probe into an alleged attack on its workers and a journalist in Bhopal. A party delegation met the Police Commissioner at police headquarters on Monday and submitted its concerns.

The delegation alleged that BJP workers laid siege to the Congress office and carried out an attack, which it termed a serious blow to democratic principles. Party representatives said violence directed at a political office cannot be justified as a form of legitimate dissent.

A particularly grave allegation, according to the Congress, is that the workers who were being attacked were later lathi-charged by the police. The party has questioned what it calls a biased police action in the case.

Mukesh Nayak, who heads the media department of the Madhya Pradesh Congress, spoke to reporters and said several party workers were seriously hurt on Monday. He also confirmed that a senior journalist was injured in the violence and had to be taken to a hospital.

Nayak said the incident was about more than political workers. It raised concerns about the democratic climate and the safety of free journalism. If party offices, workers, and reporters covering such events are not secure, he said, it is natural for people to question law and order.

He added that the police are obliged to protect victims and act against those who break the law, and should not use force against the affected party. Nayak urged the BJP to rely on debate and ideological dialogue, saying that using violence to silence opposition is dangerous for democracy.

The Congress delegation requested a fair investigation of the whole episode, identification of the attackers and strict action against them as per rules. It also asked that the injured workers and journalist receive proper redress, that the police conduct be examined, and that accountability be fixed for any official found to have acted partisanly or improperly.

The party maintained that keeping law and order is the responsibility of the police and that acting impartially, free from political pressure, is the duty of the police and administration.
