Bengali Cinema Icon Raja Sen Succumbs to Multiple Organ Failure

Celebrated director Raja Sen died at the age of 70 after a cascade of health problems led to failure of several vital organs. The veteran of Bengali cinema had been admitted to SSKM Hospital on August 13 following a spinal injury. While treating the injury, he developed lung issues, followed by worsening heart condition and kidney distress.

His wife Papia Sen explained that despite constant monitoring and ventilator support, his cardiac arrest triggered a rapid decline in organ performance, and the doctors could not reverse the damage.

Born in Kolkata on November 10, 1955, Sen first worked in television before delivering his first feature "Damu" in 1996, which earned him a National Award for Best Children’s Film. He later won awards for "Atmiyo Swajan" and several documentary projects that highlighted Bengal’s artistic heritage.

Sen is survived by his wife Papia and daughters Subhashri and Shreyashi, leaving behind a lasting legacy in Indian cinema.
