Bengal Dancer Death in Shantipur Under Police Investigation
Shantipur, a town in Nadia district of West Bengal, was shaken on Tuesday after a young woman working as a dancer was found dead in her home under unclear circumstances. Police have begun an inquiry, and the cause of death remains unconfirmed.
The woman's body was found hanging, and the case is being examined as a possible suicide. Investigators are yet to determine whether foul play was involved.
Family members say that everything appeared normal the night before. After dinner on Monday, the household retired to bed, and no abnormal behaviour was noticed in the young woman.
The discovery was made early on Tuesday. The woman's mother found the door of the house locked from the inside and received no reply when she called out. Relatives then broke the door down and found the young woman hanging from the roof. Police were informed immediately.
Police took the body to the Shantipur State General Hospital, where doctors declared her dead. It was subsequently sent to the Ranaghat Sub-Divisional Hospital for postmortem examination.
The deceased has been identified as Baby Mahato. Her father, Ajay Mahato, has said the family has two daughters and that Baby was the younger one. She was involved with tribal organisations alongside her studies and had been working as a dancer at various venues.
Sources in the area say she took up dancing because of the family's financial situation. The family has not wanted to comment publicly, but police are questioning them to understand more about the woman and her acquaintances.
Residents of the locality have expressed shock over the incident. Though suicide is being considered the initial possibility, the real reason behind the death is still not known.
Investigators have stated that the cause of death will become clear only when the postmortem report is available.
The Shantipur police station has initiated an investigation and recorded a case of unnatural death.
