Battlegrounds: Pathankot Constituencies Ahead of 2027
The ramp-up for Punjab’s 2027 legislative assembly elections has triggered a fresh wave of strategic planning across the state. Election officials and party workers are dissecting historical voting patterns to anticipate future outcomes. The Pathankot district’s trio of assembly segments, Sujanpur, Bhowa (SC), and Pathankot, stands out for its volatile and closely contested results.
Sujanpur’s political history shows a clear departure from tradition in the most recent election. The Congress successfully overturned the BJP’s three-term dominance, which lasted from 2007 through 2017. In 2022, Naresh Puri clinched the seat with 46,916 votes, defeating Dinesh Kumar (Babbu) by 4,636 votes. Kumar polled 42,280, while AAP’s Amit Singh Manto garnered 29,310 votes to finish third.
The Bhowa (SC) constituency demonstrated how slender margins can define victory. The AAP captured the seat from the Congress with a 1,204-vote advantage. Lal Chand Kataruchak’s tally reached 50,339, narrowly edging out Joginder Pal, who received 49,135 votes. The BJP’s Seema Kumari secured 29,132 votes, finishing third.
Pathankot proper saw the BJP reverse a recent loss to secure a solid 7,759-vote victory over Congress. Ashwini Kumar Sharma won with 43,132 votes, compared to Amit Vij’s 35,373. The AAP sent Vibhuti Sharma to third place with 31,451 votes.
Speculation surrounding the 2027 polls suggests that Pathankot will witness a brutal contest between major rivals. The outcome will likely be dictated by the voting behavior of urban and Dalit constituencies, which carry significant weight in the district. Campaign machinery is already being mobilized to secure these pivotal demographics.
