Ban on Social and Political Bodies in J&K Faces Legal and Moral Scrutiny

The Ministry of Home Affairs recently declared a number of groups in Jammu and Kashmir illegal, citing intelligence reports linking them to separatist and terrorist activities. Among those listed are Jamaat‑e‑Islami, Jammu & Kashmir Liberation Front, Awami Action Committee, JK Ittihadul Muslimeen, JK Peoples Freedom League, Dukhtran‑e‑Millat and extremist outfits such as Hizbul Mujahideen, Lashkar‑e‑Taiba, Jaish‑e‑Muhammad, Al‑Badr, Al‑Umar Mujahideen and the J&K Islamic Front. Mirwaiz Umar Farooq’s comments came as courts continue to hear petitions challenging the bans and the seizure of assets. He warned that ignoring legitimate political actors and replacing them with state‑appointed alternatives will not create a sustainable political framework. Instead, he called for inclusive dialogue that respects the rule of law and promotes genuine peace.
