Balatal Base Camp Holds Pilgrims for Three Days Over Monsoon Alerts
The monsoon season has intensified in Jammu and Kashmir, prompting officials to keep pilgrims at the Balatal base camp for an extended three‑day period. The order, communicated on July 19, advises devotees to avoid proceeding further along the Amarnath trail until the rainfall subsides.
One pilgrim shared their perspective, noting, "We arrived for the Amarnath pilgrimage, but the forecast shows heavy rain. The government’s three‑day pause is meant to safeguard us, and they will reassess the situation before allowing movement again."
A second pilgrim, who had just reached the camp, added, "The safety of all travelers is paramount. We are ready to wait, and if the weather worsens, we will remain where we are until it is safe to continue."
Authorities have urged future travelers to verify weather conditions before departing and to avoid bringing vulnerable family members.
A seasoned devotee from Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh, who has completed the Amarnath trek fourteen times, stressed that landslide risks are a key reason for such halts. "The government’s actions are aimed at protecting each pilgrim, and we must respect those measures," he explained.
