Azam Khan in Judicial Custody Till November 13 in ED Case

Mohammad Azam Khan, a leader of the Samajwadi Party, has been placed in 14-day judicial custody on Sunday. This follows his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate a day earlier in a money laundering case connected to Jauhar University.

The Ghaziabad MP-MLA court ordered that Khan will remain in judicial custody till November 13.

Addressing the media, Khan's lawyer Danish Ali confirmed that Azam Khan has been sent to judicial custody. Ali also said the ED has sought custody to conduct further interrogation.

Khan's arrest on Saturday took place right after the ED temporarily attached land and buildings worth 426.46 crore rupees. These properties are linked to Mohammad Ali Jauhar University in Uttar Pradesh's Rampur district.

The attachment was made as part of a probe into money laundering involving the Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar Trust, Azam Khan and other persons.

His legal troubles have intensified after temporary relief granted by the Allahabad High Court to him and his son Abdullah Azam. The high court had suspended Azam Khan's sentence in the double PAN card case and also granted him bail on Thursday.

In the money laundering case, the ED has taken control of university properties with a current estimated market value of nearly 1,170 crore rupees.

The ED stated that the Jauhar Nagar campus in Singan Khera village of Rampur is owned by the Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar Trust, which was set up and is operated by Azam Khan. He is also the honorary chancellor of the institution.

The probe originated from 26 FIRs filed at the Azim Nagar police station in Rampur. These FIRs accuse the university of forcibly acquiring farmers' agricultural land.

A district administration investigation also found that around 34 acres of enemy property in Singan Khera village were occupied for the university despite the cancellation of the land lease. This land was later recovered through the district administration by the custodian of enemy property.
