Azad Maidan Hunger Strike Blocked: Police Cite 2025 Assembly Rules

Jalna, September 13 — A hunger strike that was to be held on September 19 at Mumbai's Azad Maidan has been halted after the police refused to grant a permission slip. The refusal, announced by Mumbai Police, references potential violations of the 2025 Public Assembly, Demonstration and Procession Act. Activist Manoj Zargane Patil, who is leading the protest against the Maratha reservation issue, slammed the decision as a breach of constitutional guarantees.

Patil, speaking from Antarbari Sarati, accused the Mahayuti government of using the law to suppress dissent and create an atmosphere of unrest. He questioned the police rationale, asking why authorities presume a breach of the law before the protest even begins. Patil reminded that the High Court has already ruled that his travel to Mumbai cannot be obstructed.

Addressing concerns that upcoming festivals might trigger law‑and‑order challenges, Patil highlighted that his previous march during Ganesh Chaturthi was conducted peacefully, without any incidents. He affirmed his dedication to the Constitution and the judiciary, noting that his legal team will decide the next move against the Police Commissioner’s order.

Patil reiterated that the scheduled march from Antarbari Sarati to Mumbai will start on September 15 as planned. He warned that any attempt by the administration to silence his voice will be met with legal resistance, and his lawyers are ready to contest the police’s denial in court shortly.
