Authorities told to provide alternate spots for vendors amid Navratri, Diwali, Chhath
In a bid to ensure the economic survival of informal traders during the country's major festive period, the National Human Rights Commission has issued new instructions to all regional administrations. The commission's order stresses that street sellers, ferry‑boat operators, potters and other small business owners must not be displaced without legitimate justification during Navratri, Diwali and Chhath Puja. When safety concerns require a clearance of a specific area, authorities are obligated to allocate another appropriate location where vendors can continue their commerce. The NHRC also cautioned against arbitrary seizure of merchandise and called for swift legal action against any form of intimidation, forced payment or baseless interference. State secretaries are tasked with forwarding these directives to district magistrates, local bodies, police and related officials, and must submit a full progress report by 18 October.
