Authorities Launch Hotline and QR Code to Track Fake Medicine Networks

In a bid to curb the spread of counterfeit pharmaceuticals, Karnataka's health department has introduced a 24‑hour helpline (1902) and a QR‑code portal for the public to relay information about suspicious drug sales. Minister U.T. Khader stressed that the initiative will help map the distribution routes used by illegal traders.

The state recently uncovered a ₹5‑crore counterfeit drug cache in Ramanagara, a district that appears to be a hub for the illicit network. Preliminary investigations suggest that similar operations may be functioning in other regions of India, prompting calls for an inter‑state inquiry.

Officials assure that any tip leading to an arrest will qualify the informant for a monetary reward of ₹10,000‑₹50,000, provided the information is corroborated. All submissions remain confidential, and the department will verify batch numbers and purchase records to differentiate genuine products from fakes.

Khader warned consumers to stay vigilant, especially when high‑priced medicines are offered at steep discounts. He urged people to question the source and report any irregularities immediately.
