Authorities evacuate nearby homes after Thane building partial collapse
Following the partial collapse of a residential structure in Thane’s Azad Nagar area, local authorities have ordered the evacuation of three houses neighboring the site. The incident, which took place on Friday, caused the death of a 12‑year‑old boy and injured two adults.
The fallen portion of the building struck the adjacent home where members of the Jaiswal family were sleeping. Jaikumar Jaiswal, 12, was found trapped under debris and could not be saved despite immediate medical attention.
His mother, Urmila, 35, and younger brother, Vaneet, 9, sustained head injuries and are currently receiving care at Titan Hospital, Manpada.
Rescue teams, police and relief workers quickly secured the area, commencing a rescue operation and a thorough search for any additional victims. The site remains under investigation, with experts from the Mazhivada Ward Committee, the Public Works Department and the encroachment department conducting structural safety checks.
The evacuation is part of a precautionary strategy aimed at preventing further loss of life while the authorities clear rubble and assess the stability of surrounding buildings. The incident follows a fatal collapse in Mumbai’s Manakhuard Janta Nagar on July 7, which killed six people, underscoring growing concerns about building safety in Maharashtra.
