Authorities Confiscate Expired Dairy Items and Flag Labeling Gaps in Bangalore Ice‑Cream Plants
Bengaluru, October 9 – In accordance with directions from the state’s Health and Family Welfare Ministry, the Food Safety and Drug Administration carried out a coordinated raid on 45 ice‑cream production sites throughout Karnataka. The operation yielded 70 food samples, encompassing ice‑cream, milk powders, flavoring agents, sugars, and other adjuncts, all sent to certified labs for compliance testing.
Investigators uncovered a range of expired foods at Savara Ice Cream Café, confiscating items such as Marigold Britannia biscuits, Nandini Samriddhi milk, electrolyzed tea, coffee mixes, and coconut powder. Similar expired dairy assortments, including plain caramel and Nestlé MilkyMist Khoa, were seized from M.N. Enterprises. Both firms failed to meet labeling and shelf‑life requirements stipulated by the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
The inspection also highlighted sanitation shortcomings at Gemini Ice Cream Manufacturing Unit in Rayachur, resulting in an official notice for corrective action. At John Candy Ice Cream Manufacturing Unit in Mysuru, labeling irregularities led to the seizure of ice‑cream products valued at Rs 20,000.
The FSSAI commissioner affirmed that any factory with identified deficiencies will face prosecution under the 2006 Act and its rules. The department plans to sustain such surprise inspections across the state’s ice‑cream sector to protect public health.
