Authorities Confiscate ₹98 Lakh Worth of Expired Products Across Bengaluru

Karnataka’s Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDDA) announced that a city‑wide crackdown in Bengaluru has led to the confiscation of expired food and unlicensed medicines valued at roughly ₹98 lakh. The operation, launched on the orders of Health Minister U.T. Khadar, was conducted under the Food Safety and Standards Act‑2006, its 2011 rules, and the Drugs and Cosmetics Act‑1940.

Investigators examined mandatory labeling, manufacturing and expiry dates, shelf‑life claims, and overall compliance with safety norms. They also inspected the supply chain of e‑commerce platforms that were selling these items.

Major findings include: • BLR6 High‑Tech Defense and Aerospace Park, Devanahalli – confiscation of ₹14 lakh in falsely labelled items and ₹10 lakh of expired food, plus ₹2.45 lakh of medicines without licences. • BLR7RKVI Developers centre, Ankala taluk – seizure of ₹19 lakh of mis‑labelled goods and ₹13 lakh of expired stock, alongside ₹1.57 lakh of unlicensed drugs. • Instamart Hub, Hoskote, Bengaluru Rural – closure of the centre after discovering ₹42 lakh of expired food and unsanitary conditions. • Saptah Bazaar, HBR Layout – recovery of approximately ₹10 thousand worth of expired groceries, dairy, and vegetables sourced from online sellers.

Summarising the data, the department reported ₹33 lakh of incorrectly labelled products and ₹65.10 lakh of expired foods, totalling ₹98.10 lakh, and an additional ₹4.02 lakh in unlicensed medicines. Ongoing inquiries at the Hoskote facility involve products valued near ₹1 crore, which are not yet included in the final seizure amount.
