Assam’s Low‑Cost Dal and Sugar Scheme Returns, Targets 7 Million Residents

Guwahati – On Monday, Assam's chief minister announced the reinstatement of the state's subsidised food initiative that sells pulses and sugar for just Rs 100 per kilo. The scheme is designed to reach an estimated 7 million people who meet the eligibility criteria. After a three‑month suspension caused by delays in the state budget process, distribution began again from the Raga block of Nagaon district. Although dal and sugar are now being supplied at the reduced price, the distribution of salt remains pending due to technical problems. The administration has pledged to start the salt supply within a few days. This step is seen as a relief measure amid soaring food inflation that is affecting low‑income families across Assam. In the same briefing, the chief minister addressed the border clash with Arunachal Pradesh, highlighting that senior officials from both states are engaged in negotiations. He underscored Assam's resolve to safeguard its land and mentioned that extra security forces have been deployed to keep the border area stable.
